“W.C. Fields, a lifetime agnostic, was discovered reading a bible on his deathbed. “I’m looking for a loop-hole” he explained…
-W.C. Fields
The fact is that the Scriptures are unique in every way from the history of the manuscript evidence (the accuracy from which the bible has been copied down over the centuries) to the continuity (written over 1,500 years, over 40 generations, by over 40 authors from every walk of life, kings to fisherman etc. written from different places, dungeons to palaces, written at times of war and times of peace, written on three continents Asia, Africa and Europe, written in three languages Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic, As well the scriptures consider literally hundreds of controversial topics none of which when taken in context contradict each other). The fact is that the bible is true and you can trust that the scriptures were written by those who were very close to the events contained in scripture some of which were actually present during the events. No other writing can compare with the historical trustworthiness of the scripture; for example the most wide read historical work was that of Homer’s Iliad, which was written in 900 B.C the earliest copy of the Iliad was 500 years after it was written by Homer in 400 B.C and we have 643 manuscripts from which we can gauge its trustworthiness. The New Testament Scriptures on the other hand were written between 43-100 A.D the earliest copy was made (at longest estimate )25 years after the last portion was written and we have 24,000 manuscripts from which we can gauge it’s trustworthiness. The New Testament stands up under all manner of critical analysis for example the New Testament has about 20,000 lines that make up the work, the Iliad has about 15,600, 764 lines or 7640 words of the Iliad are questioned whereas 40 lines or 400 words of the New Testament are questioned as being attributed to the original writer.
What am I saying? The bible is trustworthy it says of itself in 2 Timothy 3: 16-17 “All scripture is God Breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness so that the man of God may be equipped for every good work” (NIV). Scripture is useful and necessary for all life, Jesus says in Matthew 4: 4, “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God” (KJV). The fact is that the bible is God’s word and many have tried to destroy it by banning it, or burning it, from the days of the Roman Emperors to the present day Communist run countries, but they could not and cannot stop it’s spread because it’s not mans book it’s God’s book. In the mid 17th century the brilliant philosopher Voltaire was quoted as saying in one hundred years from his time Christianity would be swept out of existence and into history, only that Voltaire is the one who has been swept into history, the irony being that only 50 years after the death of Voltaire the Geneva Bible Society used his printing press and his house to make and store bibles. The bible is still being produced, sold and distributed, even more so it is loved and studied by millions of people around the world. I encourage you to look into this book that has changed so many lives, mine included, and see how your life can be changed as well.
